An Evening of Leadership Insights with Larry Kestelman

How often do you get the chance to sit just metres from a billionaire and hear the unfiltered truth behind his journey? EO Melbourne members were treated to such a rare occasion at Up Close and Personal with Larry Kestelman. Held at the striking Fantauzzo Gallery in South Yarra, the evening featured EO member Leah Akoka, Founder and Managing Director of Wall Street, guiding the conversation as the host.

Larry Kestelman, Executive Group Chairman of the LK Group and owner of the National Basketball League (NBL), shared the remarkable story of his rise from migrant beginnings to one of Australia’s most influential business leaders. Best known for founding Dodo, a telecommunications company he successfully sold in 2013, Larry has since expanded his business empire across property, private equity, retail, hospitality and sport. His ventures include the six-star Capitol Grand development in South Yarra and acclaimed hospitality venues Yugen Dining and Omnia Bistro & Bar, both awarded two hats in 2023.

The evening was far from a lecture. Larry spoke openly about the challenges, triumphs and pivotal decisions that shaped his career. Members were able to ask questions and hear first-hand the philosophies that drive him, including his belief in surrounding oneself with the best people and embracing the mindset that “you don’t know what you don’t know.” His reflections on leadership, resilience and growth struck a chord with entrepreneurs eager to apply these lessons to their own journeys.

Kestelman also highlighted his transformative stewardship of the NBL. Since acquiring the league in 2015, he has overseen its meteoric rise with record-breaking attendance, membership and viewership. For him, sport is more than entertainment: it is an avenue to inspire communities, foster talent and bring people together. His passion for both business and people was evident throughout the evening, leaving members with not just admiration but actionable insights.

With glasses raised and conversations flowing well into the night, Up Close and Personal with Larry Kestelman was more than an event. It was an experience that epitomised the spirit of EO Melbourne: connection, learning and growth in an intimate and inspiring setting. For entrepreneurs who want to push boundaries, gain access to world-class experiences and build meaningful relationships with peers who understand the challenges of leadership, EO Melbourne offers a community like no other.
