A Day to Remember: EO Melbourne’s Family Day at Luna Park

EO Melbourne’s Family Day at Luna Park was a celebration of connection, joy, and adventure—a day where families came together to create memories that will linger long after the rides came to a stop. Members of EO Melbourne brought their spouses, children, and even friends of their kids for an unforgettable experience in one of Melbourne’s most iconic locations. From the moment the gates opened for exclusive access to the final hours of fun, it was a day brimming with laughter, thrills, and heartwarming moments.

The morning began with private access to the park from 9 AM to 11 AM, giving EO Melbourne families the rare opportunity to enjoy free rides without the usual crowds. The air buzzed with excitement as families explored the park’s timeless attractions. For the little ones, the whimsical charm of Moon Balloons and the enchanting spins of the Carousel brought squeals of delight. Older kids and thrill-seekers tested their courage on adrenaline-pumping rides like the Supernova, where flips and spins left everyone breathless, and the Coney Drop, which had even the bravest riders gripping the safety bars. Families bonded over classic favourites like the Dodgems, where bumping and spinning sparked endless laughter, and the Ghost Train, where spooky surprises brought out giggles and gasps alike.

When the park opened to the public at 11 AM, EO Melbourne attendees weren’t ready to say goodbye just yet. They enjoyed an extra hour of complimentary rides, extending the magic of the morning. Whether it was soaring high on the Sky Rider, spinning through twists and turns on the Pharaoh’s Curse, or taking a nostalgic ride on the Great Scenic Railway, there was no shortage of thrills and smiles. Even the youngest adventurers found their own slice of fun, floating gently on the Arabian Merry or marvelling at the colourful sights around them.

Beyond the rides, the day was also a feast for the senses. Families gathered at the Luna Café & Floss Hut , indulging in sweet treats and refreshing drinks. The aroma of freshly spun fairy floss wafted through the air, while coffee and snacks provided the perfect fuel for another round of fun. It was in these small, shared moments—savoring a sugary treat or relaxing with a cup of coffee—that the true essence of family bonding shone through.

What made EO Melbourne’s Family Day truly special wasn’t just the rides or the food—it was the sense of togetherness. Parents watched proudly as their children laughed and screamed with delight, teens challenged each other to conquer the park’s most daring attractions, and adults joined in the fun, proving that adventure knows no age limit. The event brought together not just immediate families but also friends of kids, creating a vibrant community united by joy and shared experiences.

As the event drew to a close, families left with tired feet, full hearts, and countless stories to tell. EO Melbourne’s Family Day at Luna Park was more than just an outing—it was a celebration of family, friendship, and the simple joys of spending time together.

The Excitement Soars High at the iFLY EO Melbourne Family Event

It was a fun Sunday for EO Melbourne families as participants had a thrilling experience at the iFLY Family Event held on 3 April 2022 at the iFLY Melbourne attraction.

The chapter never fails to come up with exciting activities like this that delight not only the members but also their entire family. It allows members to bond with their families and with other EO Melbourne members through family socials.

It was a fun Sunday for EO Melbourne families as participants had a thrilling experience at the iFLY Family Event held on 3 April 2022 at the iFLY Melbourne attraction.

Recognising the importance of entrepreneurs spending quality time with their families and loved ones, EO Melbourne has always been putting together family events for its members and their families to enjoy.

Adults and children alike had the opportunity to soar high in this indoor skydiving facility without having to jump out of an airplane. The facility is the first 14-ft diameter iFLY wind tunnel to be built in Melbourne.

Participants first had hands-on training with a professional coach as they were briefed on the safety procedures of the activity. They were also provided with flight gear to prepare them for their indoor flight. The good thing about this activity is that no previous experience was necessary and anyone over the age of 3 years old could participate.

Members have nothing but commendation for such a fun and one-of-a-kind experience. “It’s a great unique experience to share with the family,” Damian Blumenkranc said.

EO Melbourne is part of the global network of Entrepreneurs’ Organization, a unique, experience-based network that supports the needs of the 360° entrepreneur through business, family, community & personal experiences. Our chapter offers world-class learning events, skills-specific workshops and a venue to exchange business stories that help our members learn and grow.

Realising true entrepreneurial freedom

by Jamie Lingham

As an entrepreneur, I want the benefits of not only being my own boss but also having the ability to do what I want, with who I want, where I want and when I want. After 20 years of running my immigration business, dealing with staffing issues, long nights, long weekends and time away from my family, COVID was the one to push me to take on the ultimate travel, work, and family adventure around Australia.

“My business works better when I get out of the way. As much I would like to think that I am the centre of my business universe, the reality is that after 20 years, the business is just fine without me.”

The year 2020 was particularly bruising for the immigration advice industry. Instead of laying off staff, as our competitors did, we circled the wagons and took on the message from our EO Melbourne WhatsApp group to double down on marketing and use the resources around us to get through this together. As a result, we not only survived but also grew the team during this period. Personally, it was taxing and stressful, yet it was also exciting as it reignited my entrepreneurial fire and reconfirmed my ability to manage a crisis.

Fast-forward to January 2021, my wife, Penne, and I decided to purchase a camping trailer, take the kids out of school, rent our house out on Airbnb and drive around Australia, while still working on the business. Four months later, our Instagram handle ‘@leadingremotely’ was born and we were on the road!

Jamie and family.jpg

Nine weeks in and I have already learned some great lessons:

Why didn’t we do this sooner? – Our business allows us to work anywhere with internet access, and our clients don’t care if we are in Melbourne or Mexico. As a family with young kids at this age (10, 7 and 5), we feel the timing is perfect. Home school can be a battle, but we figure that they are learning more every day than they will at school.

Systems, processes and preparation – We have spent the past few years (over)-engineering the systems and processes in the business. We have also employed the right people in the right seats and invested heavily in their success (two of my team are in EO’s KEP and we are trying to get something similar for another team member in New Zealand). These team members get the same buzz that I do after the forum and it’s amazing to see their growth.

My business works better when I get out of the way – As much I would like to think that I am the centre of my business universe, the reality is that after 20 years, the business is just fine without me. This has challenged my purpose and relevance, yet the best news is that it allows me to unshackle myself of everything but the top-level strategic decisions.

It’s my eat-love-pray moment – No matter how spontaneous the trip felt, it is apparent that there is a deeper meaning to this journey. Rather than a holiday, it is a lifestyle, outside of leading remotely. It’s about letting go, as well as it’s about connection - connection with myself, with Penne and, most importantly, with my kids, before they seek connection away from our guidance and are lost to us forever.

We have already travelled more than 14,000kms over this vast land, changed three tyres, busted the water tank on our camper, and I have also torn all of the ligaments in my ankle after falling off the roof of my car. Despite this, we are still only 40% in of our planned journey, and not only am I excited for the next six months but I am also eager to meet the family that will soon to Melbourne and the impact that this amazing life experience has had on us as individuals, as a couple and as a family unit.

For more updates on working remotely and our outback journey please follow us on Instagram @leadingremotely.

How entrepreneurs can spend their weekends in the new normal

Restrictions have eased up after the quarantine, but movements are no longer the same as to how it was before COVID-19 hit the world. People are still advised to observe distancing as much as possible. Some companies have opted for flexible work arrangements with their people where certain staff members work from home. Many events and activities are still held online. As long as no vaccine is available, precautions are still advised to be taken to avoid a similar occurrence in the future.

For everyone else, it’s a new normal. Even entrepreneurs are not spared with the lifestyle change happening in our society. The boundary of home and office becomes blurred as many opt to work from the confines of their houses. Although you may have an allotted space where you do business, making it more accessible often leads you to attend to your business more than you used to. How can business owners spend their weekends and spare time in the current unusual scenarios? When you can’t go to the beach or hike to the mountains, there are other ways to take a break, especially when the stress and pressures of work are too much to handle.

Look after your body

With the health crisis that the world is facing today, it is important to look after your physical well-being. You can do some exercise or be creative in your exercise routine and indulge yourself to other physical activities that will not require you to leave your vicinity. You can also get into gardening or cooking healthy food that can help boost your immune system.

Take care of your mental health

Worrying about the future, your family, your business and your people can take a toll on your mental health. The uncertainty that the situation brings can be a major concern for an entrepreneur. Do some meditation exercises, talk to people close to you or indulge yourself into something that can help you relax and ease you of your worries. Get into music or learn a new hobby, something that can bring you little joys.

Deepen relationships

During these challenging times, it’s okay to check in with your friends or call someone whom you have not spoken for a long time. Reconnect old ties and strengthen new ones. You can even stay in touch with your clients and business associates. Attend online gatherings when you can. Most of all, spend more time with your partner and family members. Being cooped in your home may be an opportunity for you to enjoy each other’s company even more.

Clean up and organise

When you’re off your computer or not out for some business matters, you can spend time at home cleaning up, fixing things or organising your stuff. Maybe they are just waiting for you to find time to arrange them. Not only will it keep your surroundings clean but it can also be therapeutic for you.

Develop yourself

Continue developing yourself amid the crisis. There are plenty of webinars that are available online that can help you gain more insights not only on how to survive the present challenges but also on how to make yourself better in various ways. Read books and listen to podcasts on things you want to learn more.

Do philanthropic work

A lot of people are suffering. Some of them may be within your community. Take time to know the immediate needs that require quick action. As volunteering physically may not be possible yet, you can help out within your means, whether you donate to a cause or lend your expertise to a group.

We’ll never know what the future holds, but we have experienced something that has changed our lives. It has taught us to take care of ourselves and be mindful of those around us. Life goes on, and work still never stops for the entrepreneur, yet a weekly break is a welcome respite from all the stress we receive from within and around us.

Family bonding tips for busy entrepreneurs

Running a business of your own and providing quality time for the family are two priorities that many entrepreneurs try to balance in their lives. There are several schools of thoughts when it comes to juggling personal and business responsibilities. Likewise, every entrepreneur has a different approach to managing their time, based on what works best for them.

A family is a strong support system that can help business owners go through the demands and trials of the entrepreneurial journey. Correspondingly, when problems arise in the family, it can have an adverse effect on one’s well-being and of those around them. Thus, it is important to preserve the joy and unity in your family. Having a healthy relationship between couples is a strong foundation in good parenting and keeping the family together. Whether you have a young family or children that are on their teens or adolescence, having a connection with them is significant in the growth of the relationship.

Understanding the importance of family, entrepreneurs find ways to nourish and cultivate it. Some business owners may have the intention of putting a focus on their family but don’t know where to start. Remember that there is no clear-cut formula to family success because one method may work for one and not on another. Nonetheless, there are a few suggestions that you can do to deepen your relationship with your family members.

Dine together

Doing a family bonding activity does not need to be extravagant. Simple joys like breaking bread or sharing delectable food may already bring you together. The most common activity that a family share is having meals. The key factor is that you have to put family matters in your schedule as much as you do for your meetings and business transactions.

Whether you spend it at home every night or you go out to a restaurant on a weekend, eating together is a form of fellowship. Avoid using your gadgets when you’re gathered around the dinner table. Appropriate this time to converse with each other and take an interest in the lives of one another. Have one-on-one dates with your partner and with each of your kids and allot a group date where all family members can be present.

Help out in studies or do family projects

Children look up to their parents to guide them in their works. You and your spouse can schedule who will help out the kids on their school work. Better yet, do a project where the family can all partake in that endeavour. Clean the garage, landscape your garden, wash the pets or cook a meal – do something that everyone will enjoy.

Travel or take a vacation

Sometimes you really need some time off from work to relax and spend special moments with your spouse and children. Travelling can bring out the best and worst in you and your companions. But it’s also a way to get to know each other better and find means to adjust to each one’s personality. Take a vacation where memories can last for a long time. Go fishing or camping. Whatever you want to do or wherever your destination may be, make sure that you agree and plan your vacation as a family. Otherwise, if you do it all by yourself, you might end up satisfying only yourself and neglecting the preferences of other family members.

Indulge in sports or hobbies or shared interests

If you are an active family, it’s good to sweat it out over a ball game or a sport you all love doing. It could be that you are a family that enjoys doing puzzles or making beautiful arts and crafts. You probably have the heart to be involved in charity works where you, as a family, can help other families or vulnerable sectors in society. Find your shared interest and work on that to bond with each other. Doing such will also contribute to the personal development of every family member.

Involve them in your entrepreneurial journey

Because the entrepreneurial journey is full of highs and lows, it is best that your partner and children understand it as well. The good thing with EO is that the forum experience can be extended to your spouse or partner as well as to your children that are 16 to 30 years old. They can share their experiences and concerns with other spouses or other children of entrepreneurs. Whether they are interested to be involved in your business or not, taking those who are important to you in your entrepreneurial journey will allow you to walk together towards success.

All in all, discuss with your partner and children how you can nurture the love and care within the family. Despite your busy schedules, find time for each other and cherish the presence of one another. Help each other in your individual undertakings and bring out the best of every family member. When you reach your goals with your loved ones by your side, success becomes even more meaningful and fulfilling.

The importance of family support in the entrepreneurial journey

A significant element to survive the challenge-filled entrepreneurial journey is a strong support system not only at work but also at home. Entrepreneurs often wear several hats and carry out various responsibilities – business owners, leaders, mentors and parents, to name a few. They sometimes end up tired and weary physically, mentally and emotionally. Thus, having a family that fully understands and supports the journey that entrepreneurs take is a factor in one’s longevity in the business world.

The flip side is when they do not fathom the extent of the weight you are carrying on your shoulders, they may end up resentful to you and your business. You may get too busy that you end up not having enough time for them, which may lead to them becoming unsupportive to your business venture.

One way to earn their cooperation and backing to your business endeavour is to bring them with you along your journey. Allow them to grow with you and share with them your pains and successes. When you do this, they can empathise with you and extend a helping hand. So, how do family members lend support to entrepreneurs?

Emotional assistance

The biggest support family members can give to entrepreneurs is emotional assistance. Lending a listening ear, showing encouragement, providing understanding and care, and having patience when times are hard can ease the pressure on business owners. Uplifting and comforting words can sometimes do wonders to a weary spirit. A simple pat on the shoulder has a reassuring effect on a tired body. When family members bestow positive reinforcement, the most difficult challenges become surmountable.

Financial help

Most entrepreneurs start their business living off on their savings. Resources can be scarce, especially when there is no one to invest in a novel venture. There are business owners who were able to establish their enterprise with the help of family members that provide financial aid. Some of them can be in the form of personal loans, which may not burden you as compared to those you avail from financial institutions. Other family members may willingly give money, although in small amounts.

Professional advice

Family members who have experience in running a business can be your guide or mentor. They can offer specific tips or ideas that can give you direction towards achieving your goals. There may be shortcomings in working with a family member. But getting professional help from them when you cannot afford one is a huge benefit when you are still starting out.

Volunteer time

The initial days or years of your business may mean you have to work alone. At this stage, your budget is limited and paying for someone can be an added burden to your pocket. That’s when you can turn to relatives or family members who have the capabilities and the time to ease your load. They may do menial things, but can greatly relieve you from the numerous tasks you have to fulfil.

Business referrals

If you are new in the industry, you need someone to open doors for your business. To expand your network, the first you can look into is your family. Some of them may know people who can become your client or customer. Business referrals are a huge advantage to penetrate your target market.

Business gifts

Little things that you can use in your office, operations or business processes can still enable you to save an amount within your budget. Family members love to give gifts. If it is something useful to your venture, it can somewhat lessen your expenses. Some of the gifts may improve your office or organisation or reduce extra tasks and speed up things.

Even if family members are not directly involved in the business, it helps to expose them to the realities of entrepreneurship and take them with you on the journey. Consider it as a great benefit to have them behind you to support you every step of the way.

Thus, allow them to participate in your other business activities, especially when it comes to your personal and professional development. Extend to them opportunities such as attending learning events that will benefit you and your family. For example, EO Melbourne has a Spousal Forum and a NextGen Forum that enable partners and teenage or young adult children to take part in your experience as an entrepreneur. The more they grasp the nuances of your responsibilities as a business owner, the more they can assist you in your entrepreneurial journey.
