Samantha Dybac is the CEO and founder of The PR Hub, an award-winning strategic public relations and corporate communications firm she founded in 2013 that now represents some of Australia’s most successful entrepreneurs, business leaders, and high-growth, technology brands.

Sam has over twenty years of experience helping CEOs, business leaders, and founders unlock the value behind their personal brands and build the awareness, credibility, and trust needed to catapult them (and their companies) into the spotlight. She and her team represent a diverse portfolio of clients spanning digital technology and transformation, venture capital and finance, property, architecture, law, health & wellness.

Sam hosts the Top 10 Apple podcast, Influence Unlocked, and sits on the Board of the Centre for Future Europe Australia and the Advisory Committee for Ronald McDonald House Charities in Sydney.

Here Samantha shares a little more about her inspiring business journey.

Q: Could you provide a brief background about yourself, your family, and your business?

The PR Hub is 10 years old this year, a long way from what actually started as a side hustle while I was having a ‘break’ from being a business owner.

I had been working with (former NSW Liberal leader) Kerry Chikarovski, running her government relations, and managing her media engagements and personal profile. Through a series of introductions, networking events, and cold calls to people I had long admired in business, I started to build a small fold of clients, and the business has grown from there.

I’m the eldest of four children, all born and raised in Sydney, third-generation Ukrainian, and over the years, I’ve had to overcome the same fears and hesitations many of my clients face when we discuss the importance of going beyond your subject matter or industry expertise to help scale your businesses.

Today, I try to practice what I preach to clients every day; don’t shy away from your influence, embrace it. Use it in a way you can feel proud of.

As well as being a business founder and CEO, I am mum to 7-year-old Mischa.

Q: What inspired you to embark on the entrepreneurial journey?

My first corporate role while still at university was working for a company called Nad’s, which became as famous for its founding story (the now-iconic Australian brand was developed by a Western Sydney mum of Assyrian background) as its ‘no heat hair removal gel’.

I joined the company when it was fairly new and there were just four of us in the team, so my exposure to what went into running a fast-growing business (within a few years of my being there, the company went global and was turning over US$60m per year) proved invaluable.

I loved the concept of being in business so much that I actually deferred my Business/Law degree to work full-time for Nad’s, whose founder, Sue Ismael, was a huge inspiration to me. Female founders were rare back then and Sue was an incredible role model within a largely male-dominated business environment.

My first ‘real’ business was at age 23. I took out a bank loan to put money into a new business venture as a minor shareholder alongside three other cofounders, all men in their 40s who I had worked with previously in my first corporate role in brand marketing. I was insanely naive when it came to running a business, but my enthusiasm for building a business and creating something from scratch was unstoppable!

Q: What aspects of being an entrepreneur do you enjoy the most?

I love the freedom that comes with having an opportunity to build and execute an idea where you have the ability to affect real, positive change in an outcome.

In my business, I also really enjoy the opportunity that I have every day to work with other amazing entrepreneurs and play a role in helping them better understand their go-to-market messaging, and shining a spotlight on the great work that they’re doing.

Q: What are the significant challenges you have encountered as an entrepreneur?

In the very early years, I would say that getting into business as a young, inexperienced cofounder without an equal shareholding and ability to influence key decisions was a real challenge.

Now, as a solo founder, there are plenty of times when I have felt isolated or wondered what it would be like to have someone there to bounce ideas off, workshop challenges with, or spread the responsibility across all facets of the business.

Work-life balance has been a challenge for me, too, especially after becoming a mum. In the early years, I struggled with the concept of being distracted by my child when I was so passionate and invested in building my business. I went from side hustle to full-time business owner about the same time I had Mischa, naively thinking I could do both without taking proper time for maternity leave. I made some poor hires to support me at this time, to enable me to take a bit of a step back, however, the result was that the business almost went under, a costly lesson learned.

Q: What motivated you to join EO?

I took part in the EO Accelerator about seven years ago and over the years have had the pleasure of working closely with and representing several EO members from Sydney and Melbourne. They’ve always spoken really highly of the EO experience, in particular the opportunity to be surrounded by like-minded people with shared experiences and insights into how they have worked through their own challenges or success.

I really enjoy the learning and inspiration that comes from being around smart, passionate, driven business people. In my day-to-day work, while I can have some great broader conversations about business with a couple of longer-standing clients, it is not something that happens often (nor should it).

EO has been on my radar for a while but this year, following conversations with a few EO’ers - shout out to Mark Calabro and Ben Lipschitz, both clients whom I really admire and respect -  it felt like the right time.

I am also really keen to see more female founders get involved with EO.

Q: Can you share a valuable lesson you've learned from your own experience or another entrepreneur or mentor?

Someone once said to me ‘Everyone’s a listener’. We were talking about this in the context of media opportunities and which interviews or podcasts or speaking engagements are worthwhile spending your time on vs others.

While as business owners our time is always stretched, and I encourage you to weigh up the merit of each opportunity that comes your way, it really only takes that one person to hear you speaking or read your interview to help create an amazing outcome or alter the course of your business.

Don’t shy away from being a spokesperson for your business and leveraging your own personal story, experience, your successes and failures, to differentiate your business from others in your space, and give yourself a competitive edge when connecting with existing and potential customers and stakeholders.

For more, I wrote an article for Kochie’s Business Builders recently describing 5 of my favourite lessons for entrepreneurs!

With this remarkable achievement under its belt, the chapter is now gearing up for another year of transformative learning experiences. In a bold move, EO Melbourne is introducing an exciting new tier to its renowned Key Executive Program, this time exclusively dedicated to the Learning Days.

The EO Melbourne Key Executive Program (KEP) was established with the aim of assisting EO members in implementing growth strategies acquired through EO into their businesses, fostering key management buy-in and participation. This groundbreaking program allows EO members to invite key executives from their companies to participate in EO learning events, EO Accelerator learning events, and join a Key Executive Forum.

By integrating their key executives into the learning journey, EO members can collectively leverage the unique benefits of EO and share them with their key executives. The ultimate mission is to empower and align EO members and their key executives, equipping them with the necessary tools, accountability, community, and support to drive aggressive growth, master business best practices, and become exceptional leaders.

The existing Key Executive Program offers access to 4 Learning Days per year, along with dedicated Forum placement and comprehensive Forum Training.

The year starts off with a virtual learning experience in July, featuring Jim Penman, the brilliant mind behind Jim's Group, a globally recognised franchise and one of Australia's most notable and reliable brands. Jim successfully established Jim's Mowing as Australia's largest franchise chain and the most recognised lawn mowing business in the world.

In this special one-hour virtual event, Jim will share his inspiring story, explain his business principles, and discuss his philosophy of prioritising service and people over profits. He will also take us on the journey of how he expanded his empire from limited resources to cover Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Also in July, EO Melbourne Member and Elite Akademy Founder Kusal Goonewardena will take an exclusive deep dive into the cutting-edge science of High Performance. Kusal will talk about the strategies that will empower people to adopt high-performance behaviours and mindsets in all areas of their life. With Kusal's expert guidance, participants will learn how to leverage the latest research in sports physiotherapy, physiology, and neuroscience to unlock their full potential.

Following this event, EO Melbourne will gather a panel of experts specialising in four alternative sources of funding for growth-stage businesses - spanning bank debt, non-bank debt, venture capital, and private equity funding sources.

Facilitated by Jason Ellenport, EO Melbourne Member & Founding Partner at Edison Growth Fund, this event will have the following panel of experts: Kingsley Oldfield, Senior Relationship Manager at ANZ Bank, Hunter Watkin, Venture Capital Investor at Rampersand, Mike Thompson, Head of Private Equity at Edison Growth Fund, and Michael Kurland, Joint MD and Founder at Arrowpoint Capital.

Within the first quarter of FY 2023/24, EO Melbourne will hold the Accelerator/Key Executive Learning Day focusing on Cash, one of the four quarterly full training days built on the principles developed by Verne Harnish from his bestselling book Scaling Up.

Speaking of which, this leads us to one of the biggest events of FY 2023/24 Q1 — Mastering Pricing & Compensation by no less than the man, the myth, and the LEGEND, Verne Harnish – who is returning to Melbourne for this special, not-to-be-missed event.

Verne's award-winning Scaling Up workshops are renowned for their impact and actionable insights. His latest workshop focuses on Pricing and Compensation, as well as how Web 3.0 drives the emerging Org 3.0, using practical EO company examples that incorporate AI, "team of teams," pricing, and compensation strategies.

In this engaging workshop, Verne will reveal various pricing approaches for both B2C and B2B businesses and discuss the 5 key compensation design principles that transform the largest expense into a strategic advantage.

Moreover, EO Melbourne will also have a new intake for its Mentorship Program, one of the benefits of EO Membership. The program spans 12 months and participating EO Members will be paired with a mentor and provided with all the resources, tools, and knowledge they need for their monthly one-hour catch-ups, as well as ongoing support from their Mentorship Chair. The program will help members learn from other business leaders and grow as an entrepreneur.

There is so much in store for the coming FY that EO Melbourne members will enjoy and learn from.

EO Global travels in 2023

There are many benefits to being an EO Member and one of its many perks is being able to travel where they get to meet like-minded people from various parts of the world, who share their passion for business, leadership and entrepreneurship.

There are many benefits to being an EO Member and one of its many perks is being able to travel where they get to meet like-minded people from various parts of the world, who share their passion for business, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Being a global organisation with a high-quality support network of 16,500+ diverse business leaders from more than 60 countries, EO provides a lot of once-in-a-lifetime experiences for its members where they also get to explore other places and widen their knowledge. This year, there are several travel opportunities for EO Melbourne members, which both the chapter and the global network have organised.

Some of the most popular EO global travels are the EO Explorations. It kicks off this year as it returns to “the land of fire and ice” with the 2023 EO Iceland Exploration happening from 6 to 11 February 2023. In FY21/22, this Exploration sold out and it is brought back this year to allow more EOers to experience Iceland with a trip only EO can offer.

The most famous sight in Iceland attracts visitors from all over the world: the Northern Lights, a spectacular natural phenomenon. At Aurora Basecamp, guests experience a real-time indoor simulation before venturing outside with an expert guide to view the breathtaking wonder live. Even if you’ve seen them before, each time is a truly memorable experience.

Other EO Explorations lined up this year are the 2023 EO Tanzania Exploration, happening from 30 April to 5 May 2023, and the 2023 EO Mexico Exploration, which is scheduled from 26 October to 1 November 2023.

In the EO Tanzania Exploration, guests will feel the calming strength of the Serengeti’s animals and people and relish in the warmth of Zanzibar’s waters and intoxicating way of life. After several soul-filling days in the Serengeti, they will fly a few miles off the coast of Tanzania to idyllic Zanzibar, an island oasis teeming with natural beauty, rich history and unparalleled Zanzibari hospitality. They will learn about their turbulent past, indulge in flavorful cuisine and allow the salt water to renew them.

On the other hand, the EO Mexico Exploration is an opportunity for EOers to discover the spirit of Mexico in Oaxaca and the Yucatan in a way only EOers can. This event includes a special treat: on the final night, guests will join other EOers from the LAC region to celebrate the opening night of LACademy.

Apart from the EO Explorations, there are also other EO events where members get the opportunity to fly to other countries. For one, EO is organising its first-ever Leadership Academy for Womenpreneurs. The four-day immersion programme will integrate leadership content, EO experiential learning and social time to create a transformational experience for EO’s women leaders. This powerful personal formation programme will be held in Borobudur, a UNESCO heritage site in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from 20-23 February.

And the most-awaited global event of EO is the 26th Global Leadership Conference, this year to be held in Cape Town, South Africa from 25 to 27 April 2023.

Year after year, men and women of EO from around the world make the choice to raise their hands and courageously take on the challenge of creation and leadership. They rally at the Global Leadership Conference (GLC) to learn, grow and think bigger than before. At the GLC, they get the opportunity to engage with fellow entrepreneurs from around the world in one place – one conversation – for the purpose of growing together.

Closer to home, EO Melbourne is taking its Chapter Retreat this year in lush Bali, Indonesia. From 21 to 24 May 2023, EO Melbourne Members and guests will come together to Unleash The New Paradigm with a new mission of self-discovery and a new perspective. Activities and speakers are lined up where they can gain new experiences and possibilities to be stimulated, inspired and armed to take the leap to their greatest potential discovery.

These are just a few global travels that EOers look forward to this year. If you’re interested on how to become an EO Melbourne Member, visit our https://www.eomelbourne.org/join page.

EO Melbourne elects FY 2023/24 Board at the AGM, plus an inspiring talk from Fable Food CEO Michael Fox

The Annual General Meeting is one of the important events in the EO Melbourne calendar. It is the time of the year when members play their role in the election of the Chapter President and Board for the next financial year.

The Annual General Meeting is one of the important events in the EO Melbourne calendar. It is the time of the year when members play their role in the election of the Chapter President and Board for the next financial year.

Recently, the chapter has gathered and elected its Board for the FY 2023/24, ratified by the current Board. The following are the newly elected officials, who will start their term in July 2023:

President: James Murray

President-Elect, Communications Chair and Finance Chair: Costa Vasili

Strategic Alliance Chair: Damian Blumenkranc

Mentorship Chair and Key Executive Chair: Tom Ormerod

Accelerator Chair: Anthony Lam

Membership Chair: Kate Save

Membership Co-Chair: Jeni Clift

Membership Engagement Chair: Rob Roy Rankin

Learning Chair: David Fastuca

Forum Chair: John Bevitt

Forum Co-Chair: Ben Beattie

During the AGM, Michael Fox, CEO and Co-Founder at Fable Food Co, gave a talk about the lessons he learned from the failure of his first business, Shoes of Prey, and how he has brought those lessons to Fable Food.

“Failure isn't fatal, but failure to change might be" are the famous words of known basketball coach John Wooden, to which Michael also subscribes.

His experience with Shoes of Prey was something he and his co-founders described as "the kiss of death," "one of the most horrific days of their lives," and "learning the hard way" as they witnessed the collapse of their business, which led to losing $35 million of investments and laying off over 200 people after 10 years of hard work.

The experience left Michael "physically ill" to go back to the entrepreneurial track. Still, starting a new business he eventually did, and Fable Food Co was born.

Taking in both the highs and the lows of his Shoes of Prey start-up journey, Michael shared his experiences of expanding a business, not being able to scale to the mass market, and personally applying the lessons learned to his new enterprise, Fable Food, making it right this time, and building his latest venture into a successful business.

What also made Fable Food successful is Michael’s personal commitment to the company’s purpose. Growing up as a meat-loving Queenslander, he became a vegetarian in 2015 and is now vegan for health, environmental and ethical reasons. He co-founded Fable Food to help people reduce their meat consumption.

EO Melbourne Members found Michael’s entrepreneurial journey a fantastic story with great learnings and key takeaways, such as:

  • Do your research on your product fit carefully and thoroughly

  • Cut deep when you need to reduce expenses

  • Be careful who you take investment from, look for smart money

There will always be challenges in every business and failures are inevitable. But what’s important is how to bounce back and turn things around to make them in your favour.

With these lessons from Michael Fox’s talk and the promise that the new Board can bring to the table, we look forward to a more exciting journey for EO Melbourne in the upcoming FY 2023/24 and the years ahead.
